The Appearance Narratives: Bangs, or No?

Personal Yummy #76

Penelope had had bangs for most of her life. In fact, she had never considered not having them.

To begin with, her forehead was large and high… Or so she had been told.

Her bangs masked this feature nicely.

Plus, her eyes were large and dark.

Her bangs set them off and accentuated them greatly.

A few of her friends had tried to grow out their bangs on occasion…

But it hardly seemed worth the effort!

Discomfort, complaining, and dismay always followed.

But then Penelope grew up and moved to New York City, where she continued her training as a ballroom dancer.

That’s right.

As a ballroom dancer.

And—to be exact—not just as any kind of ballroom dancer, but as a competitive ballroom dancer in the International Latin style.

Mean anything to you?

Well…let’s just say that…

Bangs?

Bangs?

What are bangs???!!!

Essentially, there was zero place for them in her circle of friends and coworkers in NYC (as she quickly learned), where, in the majority of cases, they were considered an unforgivable fashion faux pas.

And forget about the competitive ballroom dance scene…

When on the competition floor, it was preferable (to put it mildly) to have one’s hair slicked back as tightly and as neatly from one’s face as humanly possible, even to the point where it hurt.

Extreme, you say?

Yes.

And perhaps even a bit ridiculous?

Maybe.

Nevertheless, Penelope eventually gave in, and she grew out her bangs.

And at first, it certainly felt weird not to have them.

In all honesty, she felt like people could see into her soul.

After hiding behind them for so many years, however, was it any wonder she felt exposed?

The feeling of exposure didn’t last long, though.

Replacing it shortly was insouciance (to her utter surprise), or—more simply—the feeling of being carefree and lighthearted.

Really? you ask.

Really?

Can growing out one’s bangs after never not having them really do all that?

Penelope swears by it.

So why not try it and experience it for yourself?

(And sign up for a dance lesson while you’re at it.)
